7 Scientific Strength Training Websites Worth Reading
You know all the big player sites in bodybuilding and working out. Now have a look at these smaller ones that present serious and reliable advice!
I found Greg’s site through a comment on Facebook and was amazed at the great articles and resources the man compiled. Have a look at his take on why cardio isn’t going to kill your gains and his excellent explanation of science vs. bro-science.
I don’t even remember where I first heard about Bryan’s site, but I’m glad I did. Bryan is a doctor by profession and athlete by call. He applies his scientific training to the fads and fallacies of the fitness world and does it in an entertaining style to boot. Read his article on people who only read abstracts and you’ll agree.
Remember that name? Yes, Alan is the one who recently got research published in PubMed. Quite rare for someone who used to be active on the bodybuilding.com forums. Over there he always was a voice of reason that stood out and he carried it over to his website. Check his opinion on the worth of credentials in the fitness industry.
I don’t agree with everything Lyle McDonald writes, but he always makes a good case of backing up his arguments. His wide collection of articles goes from performing exercises with perfect technique to a great summary of what energy balance is.
Did I say I don’t agree with everything Lyle McDonald writes? A bit more of that goes for Anthony, given his love for graphic language. On top comes a website design that makes my head hurt. Still, he has some good stuff to offer and gives you the scientific background. I enjoyed his drastic message to the low-carb people.
Strength & Conditioning Research
Chris Beardley and Bret Contreras are a bit heavy on pushing their various books, subscriptions and newsletters, but one or the other good article they have. Although I only found those written by Chris. Bret’s involvement I only deducted from us getting his world-class winning grin in the top banner. Nonetheless, have a look at the article about training volume and the one on the effect of rest on hypertrophy.
Bret also runs a website of his own, but I’m not that impressed by it, as it’s mainly filled with guest articles of various quality.
Brad Schoenfeld was the guy who collaborated on the research with Alan Aragon above. As I already said about him back when writing about their research and about Chris Beardley just now, there is a tendency to push products. Still, looking beyond that, Brad offers a lot of valuable information. Here is his take on functional fitness.
Got More?
Of course these are just seven sites out of I don’t know how many. Although it already took a fair amount of time just finding them – reliable workout websites are hard to come by. If you know more, please add them in the comments!

Anoop’s ‘exercisebiology.com’ has some great articles. Although he’s a bit slow with new updates.
