Don’t have your workout heart rate too low, or you won’t have any training effect. Have it too high, and you may encounter some health risks. How do you know you got your workout heart rate right?

What’s The Right Heart Rate?

Sometimes I read workout advice stating that you should have a “moderate heart rate” while exercising or shouldn’t “over-exhaust yourself”. I can imagine that leaves more than one beginner clueless about how to actually know you are doing it right.

It really is quite simple, which makes me wonder even more why the authors of the above articles don’t simply state it. We have to calculate your maximum heart rate and can derive moderate to high intensity from that within seconds:

Any Heart Ailments?

Of course, as I said in the video, these numbers are only valid if you heart is healthy. If you suffer from irregular heart rhythm or other ailments affecting your pump, you should use extra caution and get your doctor’s ok. For that matter I recommend that actually anyone planning to get into fitness should have a checkup before starting any fitness and workout adventures.
