Dumbbells Vs. Barbells – Which Is Better?
When you work out at home, dumbbells are the most convenient piece of equipment you can have to do resistance training. But is not having a barbell actually a problem?
Is One Better Than The Other?
Dumbbells are small and don’t take up a lot of space. A barbell is more expensive, not as easy to hide and stow away, but it can handle a lot more weight. What should you preferably get when you want to work out at home?
Each simply has its strengths and weaknesses and when to use one or the other depends on your current training status:
Dumbbells Are Better In The Beginning
So if as a beginner you go with a pair of dumbbells, you aren’t cheap, you actually are making a good choice. Only later, when you need to use a lot more weight to be working against appropriate resistance, a barbell will come in handy. That is also the point where you’ll have gone through many variations of exercises done with dumbbells, and then introducing a barbell will provide a breath of fresh air.

I agree. I have used dumbbells in the beginning and when I got used to them and could not fit any more weight on them, I went over to barbells.
Yep, I faced the same problem. And a dumbbell at some points start to look ridiculous and becomes unwieldy, when you put big plates on it. “Uh, can you see the handle?” 🙂
I agree with you. I was able to perform skull-curshers for triceps in a much better way using an ez curl bar compared to doing it with dumbbells. The variety and the excitement of a new instrument/ exercise is a must if you are working out at home,I feel. Otherwise it is easy to become monotonous and lose interset.
