Are You Fitter Than The Average Woman?
By popular demand, here they are: the stats of the average female. Are you stronger and fitter than her?
Girls Compare, Too!
When I composed the article on the fitness of the average male, it quite frankly didn’t occur to me that women could find this kind of data just as interesting.
But emails and comments taught me better and many women who work out want to find out how they stack up against others just as much as their male counterparts. So, here she is, the average woman:
Stat | The Average Woman |
---|---|
Height | 5’4″ (1.62 m) |
Body Mass Index (BMI) | 28.4 (25+ = overweight) |
Biceps | 11 inches (30 cm) flexed |
Chest | 36 inches (91 cm) inhaled* |
Waist | 34.5 inches (87.6 cm) |
Hip | 41.5 inches (105.4 cm) |
Benchpress 1RM | 60 lbs (27 kg) |
Push-Ups For One Minute | 16 |
Pull-Ups Max | 0 |
Grip Strength | 62.8 lbs (28.49 kg) |
Time To Run 1 Mile | 14 minutes, 42 seconds |
*Measured underbust. The average bra size is 36B (80C) .
You’ll notice that compared to the male’s table, I replaced the line about average back size with the average female hip. I couldn’t for the life of it find any data on the average female back. The average head size and forearm length were apparently of much more interest to researchers.
How Do You Stack Up?
The same goes to you women as to the men: if you compare yourself to the girls you see at the gym or to those insane female fitness geeks that shell out workout DVDs and books, you compare yourself to a tiny fraction of the population. Reality looks much different and even the slightest effort toward fitness can get you above the average.
That being out of the way, how do you stack up?

It looks like I am fitter than the average woman! Woot! 😀
You rock! 😀
Wow I am fitter than the average woman. That surprises me, since I have never worked out in my 26 yrs until now. After 4 kids the youngest being 2 and the oldest 7 plus fighting cancer I felt depleted and worn out and just started dieting 4 months ago and began working out 6 days ago…. glad I found a good plan to follow. THANKS!
Should you decide to get into fitness, you should be Superwoman! 🙂
