Great Shoulder Work With Arnold Presses
Arnold presses are a great shoulder exercise that combines lateral shoulder raises with dumbbell presses. Here is how to do them for full effect!
The Arnold Press
Remember that I needed something to replace military presses with? That’s when I came upon this nifty little exercise that for me works like a charm.
Given the name I suppose it was Mr. Schwarzenegger who came up with this combination of the lateral raise and the shoulder press. The movement shifts between these two and emphasis goes from side delt to front delt recruitment:
Other Side Delt Work
I still do another side delt exercise after this one and if you do, too, keep in mind you already had that shoulder portion do work!
I’m debating with myself if the side delts need that much. One thing is for sure: you will do worse on a side delt isolation after these!

My shoulders are my weakest area – no matter how much I work them they don’t seem to get any stronger. I do like Arnold presses though!
Do you ever incorporate upright rows? I’m relying on side dumb bell raises as a replacement, but I’m not sure if the latter exercise is an adequate substitute.
For the side delts, the upright rows in my opinion actually work better. But watch out and check how they work for you. My side delts started complaining after doing them a while. There’s one school of thought that says doing upright rows, the muscles get compressed in a bad way.
I really like the compound nature of this technique! Not exactly the same, but I often practice karate strikes and blocks while holding 15 pound dumbbells. Didn’t name that after me 🙂
