From building muscle to losing weight: here are eight essential truths you need to know about getting fit at home.

1.  Your Body Is Your Greatest Asset

Too many people have gotten the idea that getting fit requires expensive machinery and equipment. In reality, all those complicated contraptions gracing gym floors are a fairly recent invention and for thousands of years, people built their basic fitness with plans like this one.

2. Small Spaces Are Enough

Once you have left the stage of body weight exercises, you just need to have a pair of dumbbells to do many more exercises that will keep your body entertained for a very long time. These, together with a pull-up bar, let you train your entire body and require so little space, you can store them even in the tiniest flat.

3. Anything Can Be A Weight

If you can’t afford dumbbells, hit the pantry or garage: milk jugs, water bottles, gas canisters and many more make nice weights. Practically anything that is heavy enough to give you ample resistance is a weight.

4. You Can Get Big At Home

Leading over from that, and if your main aim is pounding on muscle mass: your body gives zilch about you getting fit at home or paying $100 / month for a deluxe gym membership. All it cares about is you putting in the effort.

5. Workout Nutrition Is Simple

If you aren’t planning on becoming a professional athlete, it also doesn’t require a registered dietitian to make your nutrition fit your exercise goals. As a future bodybuilder, you need to learn about carbohydrates and protein, as a runner-to-be you mainly have to learn how to manage your carbs with a side order of protein.

6. In Vs. Out Management Means Weight Loss

Should you look at home fitness because you want to lose weight, you have to be aware that you can always outeat your fitness efforts. A 500 kcal Big Mac takes five minutes to eat, but 45 minutes to run off. Fitness can aid your weight loss, but losing weight requires you to get the calories under control.

7. If You Are Very Overweight, Just Walk

In case you got a very big helping of extra pounds, forget about complicated exercise plans and hiring personal trainers entirely. Chances are you weren’t physically active for a long time and have to start from the beginning. Getting your diet under control and doing a 30 minute walk per day will make quite a difference for you.

8. Working Out At Home Is Not For Everyone

But one thing you shouldn’t forget: you can have the latest, coolest and greatest fitness gadgets and plans, yet when doing fitness at home it’s just you versus them. If you aren’t very good at motivating yourself all on your own, you are better advised to join a gym and get more external motivation.
