Lying Triceps Extensions
There are triceps extensions and there are lying triceps extensions. If you want to do that exercise a bit more safely, choose the latter.
Safety First!
A while ago I was rightfully called out for not mentioning a safer variant of the military press (which I then rectified).
But when I now looked over the list of exercises I already covered, the little triceps extension caught my eye as well. It ‘s another of those exercises that can be done more safely:
As I said in the video, there is a bit less range of motion when doing them in this style. But I wager when you train at home, don’t have a bench and fear you might fall over doing these standing, that is a good trade-in.
Isolation Is Isolating
Also the triceps extension is, by and large, an isolation exercise, which means you should have it come after your main compounds. If, for example, you also do push-ups in the same workout, let them come first and the triceps extensions afterwards.

Looks like a really effective exercise here. I’m really struggling to lose a bit of flab in the triceps region. One thing is for sure, I will need to start of with a really light weigh and make sure I perform the reps properly 🙂
Good idea! 🙂
How does this differ from French Press/Skullcrushers?
The movement looks almost the same, but not quite.
Can this be considered a separate exercise, or would this be duplicating the aforementioned in a workout?
Good question! It has fewer stabilizers involved, so the French press / skullcrushers (with a barbell) should come first and this last.
To get more bang for the buck with this one do it with two dumbbells – then you get pretty much the same muscles working. But you have to be really strict about form, as the two arms working independently will easier lose position.
What I normally do for triceps are three exercises :
a. french press
b. camel kickback
c. decline dumbell tricep extension (two dumbells)
I vary the order each week, the weight, and I will often superset two exercises together.
I am just not sure if this would be the same as frech press, or if I can include your exercise with the french press still in the workout.
It may be too much of the same movement.
Do you do a five-day-split that you have these many triceps isolations? Personally I’m contend with three compounds that involve the triceps (dumbbell press, inclined press, close grip push-ups) and then do two direct isolations (extensions and kickbacks).
I’ve recently starting doing this exercise! I’ve been doing the triceps rope pulldown and the triceps kickbacks (both challenging but make me feel strong).
