Thanks for the kind words, David!

There are two main reasons behind me not having my own site:

1) No time to set up and manage another website - I'm a full-time student, I work on software projects, have commitments (family, friends, girlfriend), have to train myself, and, on top of that, can't function properly without 8-9 hours of sleep every night. :P

2) More importantly, I have a fairly narrow area of interest. I deal with training, both in theory and practice, and because of this, my own website would lack content that deal with losing weight, nutrition and supplements, plus some other topics which appear here by other authors, and which I'd never think of myself. :)

thanks for the response, that made a bit more sense.

an off topic question but because we are all here for the same reason really, I'd figure I would ask.

One of my main short term goals has been to be able to do 20 reps of pullups or chinups, I do not plan on joining the Marine Corps but they do stop by my highschool occasionally, and they bring their pullup bar with them. For the past three years I have been telling myself that one day I would eventually be able to do that, I am now a senior so this is my last chance. At the moment I could maybe fire off 10 consecutive chinups. I cannot go without saying though that, less then two years ago I was near anorexic; I weighed 120 pounds at 6'2'' and I could not do half of a pullup. I now weigh 50 pounds more and can do 10 so I am content with my longterm progress. But for the past few months I have struggled to make any progress with this exercise. I've been following your routine for four months now, and when I choose to put the effort in I have seen strength gains made in every exercise but this one. I have changed the number of sets, reps, even added weight which proved useless because even with just 10 pounds on me I can only manage 1 or 2 reps.

Right now, this is more of a goal to me then having a good body. I would be willing to go a month without the usual routine if I can bust my chinup plateau. Do you have any advice that differs from what I have tried because aside from that, I've only added 1 rep in the past few months and lately in my workouts my total volume has actually been decreasing linearly.

Well, you have all the tempo designations placed in there, which leads me to a conclusion that you really weren't meaning tempo in the training variable-sense of the word.

How long will it take? Years, for sure. Beginner phase should be over within a year, two at most, but the intermediate one, during which you cover about 80% of your total lifetime gains, will last at least 5 years, if not 10.

Observing changes requires a patience, but really isn't that slow a process as you'd think. For example, I found out that doing direct biceps work for myself doesn't do me absolutely no good (they're my weak, non-responding bodypart), and in fact only keeps me from progressing on rows and chins, so I ditched them. I also found out that I have no problem doing chinups with 2-6 reps, but for pullups, it's best for me to stay above 8 reps (for the sake of exercise efficiency). I also know that my best unilateral leg exercise are split squats, done in the format - one leg, rest 30 sec, other leg, rest 30 sec, then second set for the first leg... Examples of this are numerous, but yes, they take time, knowledge and will for experimenting to work. Again, this has nothing to do with using a numerical approach per se - it's only that I give you a firm, objective platform to base your measurements on.

what is a fair tempo for your weightlifting option 2 from your 21 workouts. i always read that you should figure out what works best for your own body but how do we measure that? if we base custimization progress off of hypertrophy, it will take a great deal of time to experiment with the five variables and notice if better gains are made through slight changes; growing muscle does afterall, take time.
