What a cynical view! That being said, I agree with you cynical view 🙂 The show needs eye candy, and who better than a fading b-list celebrity (and saying b-list is pretty generous)? I bet they got her for a good price. In all fairness though she probably did learn a ton about nutrition and weight management while on the circut. Not that that really matters to the shows producers since it’s more about starvation diets and way too intense exercise than it is about reasonable meal plans and long term fitness….

reckless and will cause further deterioration of health for these poor souls. That said at work we did do a competition to loose weight and was targeting 1-2 a week. It was more of a support thing than the show. Utter garbage!!!

Schmidty, yes, but I have to admit that producers around here take huge hints from the US market; “Biggest Loser”, for example, recently started its German version.

The one difference we have is the two big channels ARD and ZDF, who are publicly funded (it’s mandatory to pay a, well, “television tax” for their benefit) and don’t solely have to rely on advertising money to do their programming – think PBS on a very large scale.

From what little I’ve watched, German TV doesn’t seem to be as discriminatory when it comes to who gets in front of the camera.

America, on the other hand, has a really bad, long-standing rap for being overly superficial, oberflächlich. We are doomed as intellectual beings, so long as the only requisite for stardom is a pretty smile.

My recent post in the forum “Writing Well: Is It Important?” stands as a testament to that.
