Agree that the paleo template - with emphasis on whole foods, eliminating processed foods, reducing PUFAs, not being afraid of saturated fat, etc - is the way to go. But disagree on the grains issue. There isn't any validity to the argument that grains offer unique health-promoting properties that can't be readily gained in greater abundance from consuming fruits and vegetables. Ounce for ounce, anything grains (whole or otherwise) can do, produce can do much better. And it's usually the case that studies that point to the health benefits of whole grains are generally fundamentally flawed at their premise, in that they compare whole vs processed grains instead of grains vs other food sources for the same nutritional benefits. I advocate a kinder/gentler form of paleo that allows for some well chosen dairy and find it to be a very satisfying and healthy way to go.

Wow! Great post! Removed any doubts incited into me about grain and milk by among others a 1h long lecture I saw on youtube from googletech. From now on I'm checking everything myself before I start doubting what I already know to be true.
Great work!

I have to admit, I can't eat them or any other organs. And I can't even say it's a cultural thing, because I know enough people enjoying everything from chicken hearts to blood sausage (that very German specialty).

The thing I find most laugheable about the paleo worshippers is that they don't realise the most obvious things. If we took our paleo ancestors to the grocery store, they would not recognize a single damned thing there. And I am not talking about the processed food dpt. Hell, even our pre-1500 AD ancestors would not recognise 2/3 of the stuff.

So much about reality.

Maybe they should read http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Wild-Life-Year-Living/dp/055277460X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332241740&sr=8-1 and reconsider their life priorities. Like spending the winter eating just honey, rabbit and corn salad.

Cheers mate. The only form of dietary carbohydrate manipulation with any scientific underpinning that I'm aware of is carbohydrate-loading for sports.

That being said, I have not researched carb-cycling in any serious depth. Although I have a feeling Evil is right on the money.

I'm not Rani, but I did an article on carb cycling a good while ago, that might clarify it a bit:
