What to eat after a workout is one of the most frequently asked questions in working out, bodybuilding and fitness. But it actually is rather simple.

Liquids, Carbs And Protein

When you worked out, you may have sweated, you used up a lot of the muscles’ most important fuel source and they may be ready for some of their building blocks to get growing.

Here is how replenishing liquids, carbohydrates and protein fit together to form the big picture of post-workout nutrition:

Here and here you can find two interesting studies that provide some more background information on the subject.

It doesn’t matter. You only gain fat if you eat more than you burn. This explains it:

But, very important, without carbs your workouts very likely are worse:

I can’t believe it. Citing yourself with scientific articles and encouraging the audience to actually investigate the information instead of just taking it…

That’s the most professional behavior I’ve ever witnessed in the muscle building world. The amount of uncited garbage that comes out of some weight gaining articles that people accept blindly is ridiculous. I wish everyone took after you.

    Dear EC,
Thank you for this post. One interesting thing to note in this study (the 1st link you provided) is though all the subjects who underwent resistance training increased their body mass, the fat percentage remained almost the same. That makes me wonder…is resistance training unhelpful for fat reduction?

Hey Sooraj! Yep, it is unhelpful if you work out but eat as many calories as you burn. Your muscles will become bigger, but the fat layer stays the same.

In general, resistance training doesn’t burn that many calories anyway. You have to do a 1h heavy workout to burn the same calories you burn with 1h of just light jogging. That’s because most of the time you spend on a workout is the rest you take between sets.
