Hey Sooraj! Yep, it is unhelpful if you work out but eat as many calories as you burn. Your muscles will become bigger, but the fat layer stays the same.

In general, resistance training doesn't burn that many calories anyway. You have to do a 1h heavy workout to burn the same calories you burn with 1h of just light jogging. That's because most of the time you spend on a workout is the rest you take between sets.

Dear EC,
Thank you for this post. One interesting thing to note in this study (the 1st link you provided) is though all the subjects who underwent resistance training increased their body mass, the fat percentage remained almost the same. That makes me wonder...is resistance training unhelpful for fat reduction?

I can't believe it. Citing yourself with scientific articles and encouraging the audience to actually investigate the information instead of just taking it...

That's the most professional behavior I've ever witnessed in the muscle building world. The amount of uncited garbage that comes out of some weight gaining articles that people accept blindly is ridiculous. I wish everyone took after you.

It doesn't matter. You only gain fat if you eat more than you burn. This explains it:

But, very important, without carbs your workouts very likely are worse:
