What To Eat Before A Workout

What to eat before a workout and pre-workout nutrition in general don’t have to be complicated. Find out why!

It’s Rather Simple

There’s so much discussion and upheaval about workout nutrition in general and pre-workout nutrition in particular.

In this video we are going to look at why eating regularly with enough carbs is important, why protein before a workout isn’t and what you can do to give yourself an extra bit of energy before you get going:

I’ve been trying to working out with an empty stomach, and so far it has only been an improvement for my performance. There’s something pleasant in the idea that hunger drives me to workout and I’m working out to achieve that meal. I’ve also heard that working out hungry can have some benefits in the hormonal level. Don’t really know if this makes sense, but it’s good to try out different things and see yourself how thing work. Maybe I’ll try a carb fueled workout today in honor of this video. 😀

That is a great comment, Kael, because it shows how individual preferences play into all this. Science may show that having carbs before a workout may be preferrable, but if you work out better without, then it would be absurd to follow science in that regard.

Hi there evil. Great video and very informative. I have a question thought. What about post workout meals? I have heard it is best to have simple carbs like fruit to having a protean shake. I am wondering if there is any science that says what to eat or if you need to eat. Thanks for giving people true science links that support.

Heah Yucca, a video on post-workout meals will follow, but in general, some carbs and whey protein after your workout should be most beneficial.

And thanks for the praise! 🙂

I usually have a banana before my workout. I feel they give me the most energy.

I really enjoy having a protein shake with tons and tons of spinach in it before my training. Bananas seem to weight me down.

I workout very early in the morning with a bunch of older women. As a group most of us have a problem with nausea if we eat too soon after getting out of bed. I can eat about half a banana a half an hour after I get up. Another half an hour later I am at the gym. If I am lifting weights I find my stamina fails 20 minutes into the workout. That doesn’t happen if I workout at night. Unfortunately night workouts are rarely an option. I was going to try peanut butter in the morning. It was recommended on some other site. That would be protein so it shouldn’t work right?

Heah Cindy, I know that situation; big meals in the mornings aren’t one of my favorites either.

What you can try is having a meal based on complex carbs with a protein source the evening before. Ideally an hour or so before you go to bed, as this combination should take about eight hours to digest. Your morning blood glucose level then shouldn’t be as low as you experienced and together with your half banana you should have more energy.
