Since the catastrophe at the Fukushima nuclear plant there is a good number of people who try to make a buck with selling potassium iodide supplements, to “protect yourself and your family” from radioactive iodine. In reality, these tablets are a much greater risk for your health.

Also, the WHO does not recommend potassium iodide prophylaxis for adults over the age of 40 unless exposed to a very high dose of iodine-131. This is because of their much reduced risk of thyroid cancer weighed against their increased risk of thyroid disease triggered by supplementation. In here (page 12):
