It's constantly depressing to read the science reporting here in the UK. I hope eventually more and more people will realise that most news outlets are now merely spinners of press-releases rather than Journalists. Most don't bother to or care about checking facts, even less are capable of critical analysis and some are downright deliberately misleading people (E.g. Daily Mail's constant stream of health advice). Thank goodness there are sites like this and the good folk at Science Based Medicine and SGU etc.

Well, it indeed would be hard to cure the world. But we can at least provide the occasional nudge in the right direction! ;)

Maybe they will hire me to be an objective science journalist when my knife gets too dull to cut anymore :-)

First of all I congratulate you for seeing so clearly how absurd has journalism got over the years. I live in Europe and it is the very same over here.

You said: "I’m not sure whom to condemn about this. The readers, who aren’t willing anymore to pay for quality journalism, or the publishers, who want to squeeze the most profit out of their publications? Maybe both"

Well Remember the Monkey Banana and Water Spray Experiment story about the 3 monkeys in a cage, well just like on that experiment here we have
people placed in a rat race, made to believe in Social Darwinism, where might is right. So the "you better hurry otherwise you will be left behind" mindset is everywhere.

We didn't chose to live like this, we were made to, by over 60 years of propaganda carefully placed and very well funded. To turn us into this "very superficial ego-feeding frantic consumers" or become a social outcasts.

The documentaries like "Manufacturing of Consent", "The Corporation", "Capitalism a love story" or "SICKO" ,all in their own ways, talk about what is actually going on and why. They try to show who is pulling the strings.

I am saying that just because I disagree that regular people suppose to be blamed for the mess we got into. ( Free Will vs Determinism - The old dilemma )

We are made to believe that, 1-This is the way is always going to be and 2- to think we could come up with a better society is just pathetic utopia.

So what can we do? Take things seriously, think for ourselves ask questions and be ridiculed or just take the BLUE PILL and fit right in?

Movies like: Brubaker, One flew over the cuckoo’s nest, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (apart from the American Happy Ending), Bicycle Thieves, Queimada (Burn), etc...
they all describe what the system does.

I mean William F. Buckley, Jr. had a TV show for 33 years. Noam Chomsky didn't and that is not by accident.

My conclusion is that the programed primary function of the MEDIA today is to confuse people into a numb state of mind where they are more easily manipulated.

And they are being very successful so far.
